Description of habitat in Gavdos

The priority habitat 2250* in Gavdos covers a total area of 102 hectares and has been recorded in three sites:

  • On the Northeastern side of island, in the area of Sarakiniko
  • On the beach of Agios Ioannis, on the Northen part of island
  • On the beach of Lavrakas, West of Agios Ioannis

The most common plants species of the 2250* habitat in Gavdos other then Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa and Juniperus phoenicea are: Coridothymus capitatus (Thyme), Periploca angustifolia, Ononis natrix subsp. hispanica, Cistus creticus, Cistus parviflorus, Pistacia lentiscus, Erica manipuliflora, Satureja thymbra. Other important species is Silene succulenta subsp. succulenta, a threatened species according to the Red Data Book of Rare and Threatened Plants of Greece and protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981.
