C2. Waste removal

The purpose of this action is to remove existing waste present on all the Cretan sites within the boundaries of the habitats. In general, existing solid waste is deposited either through illegal fly-tipping or visitor littering. Therefore, following the outputs of action A.5 and action A.8, the following two waste removal strategies will be implemented:

  • Fly-tipping waste removal and deposition in legal land fill using light equipment to avoid causing damage to the habitats. It is envisaged that fly-tipping removal will be carried out once for each habitat unless fly-tipping incidents re-occur prior to the end of the project.
  • Litter removal in areas within the boundaries of the habitats will be carried out using manual collection with public engagement (volunteers, local community, schools and NGOs)this action will also aim at raising local awareness regarding the habitat.

The project will only remove waste accumulated before the project. The cleaning up of garbage and waste dumped after the initial removal would be undertaken by the relevant municipalities. Thus, it is envisaged that the relevant municipalities will maintain the habitats free of waste after the initial cleaning and after the end of the project.
