Gavdos

Coastal dunes with Juniperus spp habitat can be found on the islet of Gavdos. Gavdos located in the middle of the Libyan sea is the southern –most border of Greece and Europe! Gavdos also known as Kalypsos island is rich with history as it is with biodiversity. It is shaped triangularly, its terrain plain and semi-rocky and the climate warm and dry, with few rain showers. A big part of the island is covered with pine-trees and junipers, and also home to Temporary Mediterranean Ponds . Gavdos has 3 beaches with coastal dunes and Juniperus spp, namely Agios Ioannis, Sarakiniko and Lavrakas (see map) making it one of the largest populations in Greece.
