A3. Composition and structure of Juniperus populations

The purpose of this action is to quantitatively determine and describe the population composition and structure of the typical species of habitat type 2250*, Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa and Juniperus phoenicea, in the Natura 2000 sites of Crete. The knowledge of composition and structure is vital in determining the conservation status and especially the natural regeneration capacity of the habitat. Although some data do exist for similar sand dune habitats (particularly in the western Mediterranean), this information has not been documented for any Juniperus population in Greece and this lack of data presents a serious barrier to effective conservation. This survey will present an important input for the elaboration of the restoration specifications (action A.8) and implementation of concrete conservation actions (actions C.3, C.4 and C.8). In addition, findings from this survey will be of particular interest to habitat managers throughout Greece; therefore, important findings, conclusions and guidelines will be widely disseminated.

This Action is completed, see the deliverable of  this action below.
